The furniture-maker Herman Doomer, born in Anrath (Germany), lived from 1613 till his death in 1650 in Amsterdam. He was specialised in working with ebony. In the trade-city Amsterdam, exotic kinds of wood were quiet easily to find. Another speciality of Doomer was making of frames. Probably, he delivered several frames to Rembrandt, who made a portrait of Doomer and his wife Baertje Martens in 1640. Herman Doomer was a successful furniture maker, because the couple could afford them to had made this painting by the most famous and expensive portrait painters of that moment. The paintings can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
