A PAIR OF RUSSIAN OAK ARMCHAIRS, AFTER A DESIGN BY VASILI PETROVICH SHUTOV (1826-1887)
Carved with different ornaments, center back with balalaika, axe armrests, leather seat with lumberjack gloves, the back and the front legs in one piece as a Russian harness (duga). The chair's backrest is inscribed in old Slavic with a famous Russian proverb : "The slower you go, the further you get".
The form of these chairs is derived from 17th century Russian folk furniture and was originally produced by Vasili Shutov in 1870 for the All-Russian Manufacturing Exhibition in St. Petersburg.
